Butterflies are Free

Hand embroidered butterfly on watercolored muslin.

Someone Saved My Life Tonight by Elton John
When I think of those East End lights, muggy nights
The curtains drawn in the little room downstairs
Prima Donna lord you really should have been there
Sitting like a princess perched in her electric chair
And it's one more beer and I don't hear you anymore
We've all gone crazy lately
My friends out there rolling round the basement floor
And someone saved my life tonight sugar bear
You almost had your hooks in me didn't you dear
You nearly had me roped and tied
Altar-bound, hypnotized
Sweet freedom whispered in my ear
You're a butterfly
And butterflies are free to fly
Fly away, high away, bye bye
I never realised the passing hours of evening showers
A slip noose hanging in my darkest dreams
I'm strangled by your haunted social scene
Just a pawn out-played by a dominating queen
It's four o'clock in the morning
Damn it listen to me good
I'm sleeping with myself tonight
Saved in time, thank God my music's still alive
And I would have walked head on into the deep end of the river
Clinging to your stocks and bonds
Paying your H.P. demands forever
They're coming in the morning with a truck to take me home
Someone saved my life tonight, someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved my life tonight, someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved my life tonight
So save your strength and run the field you play alone

The last few days I have been unable to pull myself away from the television watching the news about the horrible earthquake in Haiti. I've been horrified, sad, inspired and unable to think of the words to describe my feelings except for the grace of god go I. Last weekend I was embroidering Butterfly and this song kept going through my mind and as I thought of a way to address my feelings about Haiti and write a blog post, this song gave me the answer. Blessings and prayers to all with family and all the lost souls in Haiti. I hope you are free, one way or the other.

There but for the grace of God...it seems like the big tragedies always happen somewhere else, but something like this could still come to us someday. We do get all the little tragedies! God help us all.

Love the butterfly and the song. "Listen to me good!"

Lovely butterfly and post. I guess we just don't want to think that anything can happen to anyone at any time.

Thank you for the wake-up message -- we need to hear these things sometimes.

I'm also grateful for the lovely note you left on my blog post -- many thanks.

It is so heart-wrenching to see the suffering and then wonder why innocent people have to endure such agony. I am thinking always of those that are trying to cope and sending some grace to their hearts. Your butterfly is indeed the image that that would help them transcend and give them hope.
